Patterson’s solicitor Jeff Smith said: “I have no observations to make.” No pleas were taken from the defendant and the case was transferred to Newcastle Crown Court, where Patterson will make his next appearance on February 27. Police were originally called to Front Street at 9.15pm on Tuesday after reports of a disturbance in the street.

Soon after, they found two bodies at a £500,000, five-bedroom house, located between the school yard of St Bartholomew’s Primary and the grounds of St Aidan Church.

Chief Supt Steve Neill, North Tyneside Area Commander, moved to reassure the local community.

He said: “Incidents like this are very unusual but we recognise it will have caused some concern in the community.

“Extra neighbourhood officers are out on patrol in the area around Front Street and Benton to provide reassurance and to gather information.” Families in the area have told of their shock at the two deaths.

Double murder suspect Glen Patterson has appeared in court accused of the murder of his dad and grandmother.

He was brought into the dock at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in handcuffs to face the charges.

The 25-year-old, of Front Street, Benton, North Tyneside, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during the five-minute hearing.

Flanked by two security guards and wearing a black sweater, he spoke softly and then listened in silence as the court’s procedural matters were carried out.

A packed public gallery heard he was charged with the murder of his father Ray Patterson, 61, and paternal grandmother Clara Patterson, 82.

Prosecutor Keith Laidlaw said: “Mr Patterson is before you charged with two murders - of his grandmother Clara and father Ray.

“The events took place on Tuesday night when Mr Patterson was found running out of traffic and police attended.

“It is my application for a remand in custody.” No further details of the incident were given.
